THE ALF. BAYLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

To the Editor. Sir,—A scholarship having been determined as the most desirable method of perpetuating the memory of the late Mr. Alf. Bayly, the Taranaki Rugby Union are appealing to the public for financial assistance, to provide a scholarship which will be of pecuniary aid to the winner. The proposed scheme has been published, and though in minor details it may be altered, the principle will remain. Briefly the idea is that a scholarship, to .be known as the Bayly Memorial Scholarship, and to be held for two years, be-instituted, open to all boys in the Taranaki provincial district, who have attended school for 12 months. The education test, to be conducted by the Education Department, ■will be the National Junior Scholarship examination, comprising She following subjects: English, arithmetic, geography, drawing and general knowledge. Character is taken into consideration, the headmaster, in conjunction with the chief inspector, to award a certificate. An athletic competition plays an important part and standards, with the idea of inciting all lads to attain a high degree of proficiency in the various branches of sport, will be set. At present the Union have £7B in hand, and their ambition and hope is that sufficient moneys may be raised to enable the interest to provide for two scholarships—after the first year—of £lO each. Three trustees will be appointed to invest the money. In asking your assistance to bring about the desired end, it need hardly be said that the scheme is one which appeals to all classes' of a community. To the followers of football and the athlete, the name of Alf. Bayly will ever be a household word; ' to those who have no interest in bur material game there is a chance of helping a project for the benefit of the children, and which may be the means of enabling some child to continue its studies at-the secondary schools of the Taranaki and Wanganui Education Boards. The Taranaki Union will deem it a favor if you will consent to allow a subscription list to be opened at your office. ' Thanking you in anticipation,—l am, etc.,

P. SKOGLUND, Hon. Sec. Taranaki Rugby Union. [The subscription list now lies at our office]
