THE WINTER SHOW.
lIAWI-.'HA AND NKW PLYMOUTH COMPARED. The flawera Star, in referring to the reported apathy of some of the members of the Taranaki Agricultural Society's \\ inter Show committee, writes, inter alia: —"Of course, New Plymouth Ims an undeniable riyht to go on with its \\ inter .-.now, but ill view of the apathy being displayed it is rather a pity that interest is not transferred to the South laranaki fixture, in connection with which such material progress has been made. So far as the province is concerned a poor exposition at New Plymouth will have, if anything, a damaging effect As between Aew Plymouth and IJawera, let us see what is being done. The New Plymouth committee estimate their expenditure at £-249; their receipts at U4U (including an estimate of C2OO from tile gates). The South Taranaki Winter Show Co., for its lirst show in Ila went this year, proposes to give .-CSOO in prize nioney and trophies alone. Here the project has- been entered upon with enthusiasm which assures siicces-. Huildings in eon- v erete, covering 20.00(1 M |iiare feet, which with linings will cost .CHKIU, are in course of erection within n minute's walk of the ilawcra post otlice. Business arrangements are being made to make thi, building revenue-producing all the year round, thus increasing the ability ot the company to give larger prizes for competition. For the lull show two £.-.0 cups have been promised by London (inns. The dates of the show have be. ; n definitely fixed for July 13. 14, I.) and lb on the advice or the principal (inns dealing in machinery, and entries have already been received, even from the South Island. J lie Department, of Agriculture has undertaken the judging of dairy produce, "'"I tll(> I>ri 'ne Minister has promised to open the first show. Throughout there Has been an unflagging zeal and as time goes on the feeling grows that the highest expectations of the promoters will be abundantly realised. It is beyond questnm that some place much further! down the line than New Plymouth is the natural centre for the provincial <lairv show, and since llawera has made such strides forward there is no doubt that tile . outh Taranaki Company's efforts will receive the loyal assistance and hearty support, of the whole of this countryside. Anvthinir less inipo»inc than the exhibition ti> be witnessed in Hawera will not reflect credit on New Plymouth, ami wo <>finnor •help thinking that* unless tlio iieonlo <>f the northern town are prepared to do tilings well it were better for the dairymen of Taranaki that jhev did nothing at all." l'roni this it is apparent, as we remarked on Tuesday morninjr. that the New Plymouth Committee ' can learn something from our neighbors at llawera !
