DISTRICT NEWS

HILLSBOROUGH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Although irather late in the season, the annual picnic of the school children took place on Thursday last, the weather being all tJiat could be desired. During the (lay the children enjoyed themselves thoroughly, running races for ■money and for toys, the events taking place -in Mr. C. Ban-toll's paddock (kindly lent for the occasion). The tea was laid out in the school, and the parents ihad an opportunity of looking through the school for the first time since tfie additions and alterations, and expressed very great satisfaction at the improvements. Ais usual a very large audience found their way to the Hall for the concert and dance in the evening. Mr. J. R. Hill .presided, and at the close of the programme ipresented the .prizes to the children. Books to the value of about £fi were purchased, and every child received one. There were six or seven children attended every time the school had been open for the year. The children contributed a few items in their usual efficient style. The other performers were Miss Hill, Miss H. Bishop and Miss Asher, and Messrs. Guy, Asher, Nixon, Chang and Thornley. The chairman thanked all these for their kind assistance.

Really excellent music was supplied for the dance by Miss Bishop (piano), Messrs. Lovell (cornet), Salt (violin), and Turabridge (piccolo). Messrs. E. Locke, and L. Bishop were most capable masters of ceremonies.
