WHITELEY DEBATING SOCIETY
There was a fair attendance last evening at the adjourned annual meeting of the Whiteley Literary and Debating Society. Mr. "W. Aml wry presided. The Society, it was explained, had had a very successful voir, the debates having been well ciiik: !;ted and upon m!bjects of interest. There was a "mail credit 'balance as the result of the year's working. '
Officers were electtd ns follows: Patron, Mr. X. Okey, M.P.; president, Rev. .1. (i. Chapman: viee-pre.sidents. Misses Douglas iiml Dodder, .Messrs. C. Carter, P. White. W. Ambury. M. Pviuld; committee. Messrs. R, E. Maunder, S. S. Osborne. .Rev. Lewis, ft. (J. Cat run, Hisses Harry, Oxenluun, Lewis and Mrs. TV. Lewis; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. Lewis; assistant secretary. Mr. R. E. Maunder.
It was derided that the meeting* bfl held fortnightly, instead of weekly as heretofore, on account of the number of engagements requiring attention by the various members.
The meeting then proceeded to arrange the syllabus for the session, and after lengthy discussion, bristling with points of order aiid questions, a useful and workable programme was drawn up. It was decided to hold the opening social on Thursday night next, and the committee was asked to make the arrangements.
The date of the opening debate was left in the hands of the committee to arrange. The subject chosen for the lirst debate is "Heredity or Environment: Which has the greater influence?" The subject, for the second evening is the abolition of the British House of Lords.
