ATTEMPT TO BREAK A RECORD,
By Telegraph —Press Association.
Christehurch. Wednesday
A. Birch, a well-known local cyclist, left Dunediu for Christehurch at 5.2 this morning in an attempt to break the Christchurch-Dunedin road record. At Timaru he was eight minutes ahead of the previous best.
MAN i A SLIP. Dunedin, Last Night. Alfred Birch, who set out from Christehurch this morning in an endeavor to create a new cycling record to Duncdin, was the victim of a nasty accident which prevented his mission from concluding successfully. When coming down the Kilmog hill, about sixteen miles from Dunediu, and when he was well within time, Birch encountered a dog, and in avoiding it he rode into some rubble, which caused the front wheel of the machine to collapse, the rider being thrown about fifteen yards. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and brought to Dunedin by motor-car. He recovered consciousness in the evening, and was removed totlie hospital. His injuries consist of a slight concussion of the brain, a serious gash on the temple, and bad bruises on the face and legs. But for the mishap it is I regarded as certain that lie. would have established a new record.
