BRITISH INDIA COMPANY'S SATARA.

PLUNGES FORWARD AND DISAPPEARS. HER PEOPLE'S FATE UNKNOAVN. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received April 20, 7.15 p.m. Sydney, Wednesday. The British India Company's cargo steamer Satara (4500 tons) was seen to be proceeding on her course by the lightkeeper on Seal Rooks. She hoisted distress signals and turned round, obviously to put into port. The coal steamer Orara was despatched within twenty minutes of the signals. She plunged forward and disappeared. Boatloads of people were seen making for the Orara, but whether all are saved is unknown. The Orara is standing by.

A LASCAR CREW. Received April 20, 11.55 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. The Satara was in charge of Captain HugilJ, and carried nine European oflicers and a crew of 78 Lascars. TWO COOLIES MISSING. SOME NARROW ESCAPES. Received April 21, 0.5 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. Full details of the Satara disaster are not available oefore the morning, when the steamer Dorrigo with the rescued crew is expected to reach Sydney. The latest from the Seal Rocks lighthouse is that all the crew excepting two coolies are saved. The Satara left Newcastle this morning. A 'heavy sea was running, with fierce squalls. She struck the Edith Breaker just outside Seal Rocks, and lies about five miles south by east of the lighthouse, right in the course taken ■by coastal vessels. Waves are breaking over her. When the Satara was in distress she passed the Oram, but did not speak ■her. The lighthouse-keeper signalled the Orara to render assistance, and the latter at once made for the scene.

Meantime the sinking vessel launched her .boats, four of them getting clear just before she plunged under. The castaways had great difficulty in reaching the Orara, owing to a heavy sea. When aooard tliey discovered that two coolies were missing.

The steamer Dorrigo came on the scene and assisted in a futile search for the missing coolies. Two rescue steamers proceeded to the Seal Rocks bay, and the Dorrigo took many castaways aboard and .proceeded to Sydney. '
