THE SALVATION ARMY.
Colonel Saunders, architect of the Salvation Army for Australasia, who has been on a visit to Wellington inspecting the site of the proposed Prison Gate home at Island Bay, and attending to other local building requirements of the Army, left by the Moeraki on Friday evening for Sydney. In conversation with a New Zealand Times reporter prior to his departure, uoionel Saunders said that the Army had a big building programme on ihand this' year in Australia and New Zealand, involving an expenditure of about £40,000. At Ruth's Island, Auckland, where the Army held 300 acres, £4OOO was being spent in accommodation for the reclamation of inebriates, provision being made for one hundred inmates. In addition, the Army's work in Auckland was being extended in various directions. At Dunedin £IOOO was being expended on rescue home extension, the Prison Gate Home in Auckland was to be renovated, !'lid alterations! were proceeding to the Industrial Home in Christchurch. In connection with, the proposed Men's Shelter and Aletropole, to face Lone and St. Paul streets, Auckland, the plans show that there wili' be accommodation for one hundred and eight people, and the building will be constructed on practical modern lines. Meals will be provided, at 'prices ranging from Id to 4d, and sleeping accommodation at similarly convenient charges for the flotsam and jetsam of humanity who need shelter. Colonel Saunders' goes on to South Australia, where £SOOO is being expended on prison gate accommodation. Then he proceeds to Queensland in connection with the building of a large people's >palaee, to cost £15,000.
