During the three seasons that Government control in respect to stallions for public service in Victoria has been in operation 2604 animals have been examined, whereof 1973 were certificated, and 691, or 25.93 per cent,, rejected, 442 being on the ground; of hereditary unsoundness, and 249 as being below the standard of Government certification. The report of Jlie Chief Veterinary officer states that unsoundness of a hereditary character still exists to a considerable extent, and that a considerable propostion of sires are unfit for the purpose on account of mongrel Characteristics. During the past season the New Zealand Government certificates were accepted in connection with 33 stallions imported from tlie Dominion. •LABOUR PROSPECTS IN SYDNEY. Sydney, April 12. At a sitting of the Northern Mining Board evidence was tendered that miners engaged on a colliery filling trucks were in the habit of employing wheelers to assist them at wages lower than the standard, the miners themselves' pocketing the difference. This evidence was given in rebuttal of statements as to the-amount of coal a miner could fill.
