DISTRICT NEWS

, EGMONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. and Mrs. A. Morton left last week for Eotorua, via Auckland, on a holiday trip. They have so far been favored with ideal holiday weather. Although a week ago winter appeared to have wrapped us in her chill embrace, •the last day or two have been so mild that one is led to hope that the summer is not done with.

The annual meeting of the Card Club was held on Friday last in the supperroom of the hall. In the absence of Mr. J. Batten, chairman of the committee, Mr. G. Foster was voted to the chair. A letter was received, together with hooks, etc., from Mr. A. E. Winter, resigning his position as secretary. Mr. Winter's resignation was accepted with regret. The report and balance-sheet showed.a credit balance of 3s 3d. There are also seven crib., boards and packs of cards and pegs on hand. The expenses of the club are very small —only the hire for a room in which to hold meetings—so it was the object of the club to work out expenditure and receipts ai nearly as .possible, each night being made to ;pay for itself. The chairman explained that last year 2s 6d had been charged as membership fee, and the amount available had gone for the purchase of a grand aggregate prize for the player securing the greatest number of games during the season. The membership fee was fixed at 2s 6d a« formerly. It 'was resolved that the aggregate prize be done away with and that the funds from this go towards the expenses of a concert to be held at the winding-up of the season. The following new members were elected:—Messrs G. Foster, B, Burrows, N. S. James, C. James, H. James, H. Marsh, P. Marsh, G. F. Dewhirst, E. Dewhirst, F. Murphy, G. Barker, O. Kinsella, W. Eeeve and D. Price. The following committee was elected:—Messrs F. Murphy. B. Burrows, N. S. James, E. Batten and G. F. Dewhirst. Mr. G. Foster was reported hon. auditor. The Mutual Improvement Society intend getting under way again in a week or so, and a meeting is to be called at the end of April.
