BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. (From Our Resident, Corr<wpoiiio*!i;.) The monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening; present —His Worship the Mayor, Councillors, Tate, Birdling, Klensier, Black and Brabant. | An apology for non-attendance was received from Cr. Spurdle. j The clerk reported having granted Mr F. Richards permission to erect a signboard over the footpath in Queen street.—Action confirmed. It was resolved to ask the police to prosecute drivers of traps and riders' of bicycles found driving after dark without lights. The clerk was 1 instructed to have iwo additional boards oil the east side warning drivers against driving on footpaths or bv wrong roads. It was decided to send a remit to the municipal conference asking t'liat the Electoral Act dealing with the scrutiny of votes be considered. The matter of appointing a delegate was left to the next meeting. Mr J. H. Olson applied for the position of. town clerk. —To be advised that applications) will be called for the position. The deputation appointed to iproceed to Wanganui submitted their report, which showed that the proposals to dispense with the erection of a septic tank and drain, straight into tlie river Had proved sanitary, satisfactory, economiral and sound, and recommending with confidence the scheme previously outlined. It waa decided that His) Worship the Mayor and Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P., ba asked to wait on the Advances to Local Bodies Board when dealing with the Council's application for loans and in the event of His Worship being unable to go Cr, Rattenburg to take his ptace.
Mr O. F. Dowsett and Mrs Bicheno applied for repairs to footpaths.—Referred to Works Committee. I
Mr Worthington offered a price for two barrels of petroleum, which was accept-! ed.
-■ The Lighting Committee were authorised to wait on Mr Andrews re additional lights. Accounts amounting to £3465 le Bd, of which, £3 8s 8d was on account of loans, were passed for ipayment. The engineer on work done by the contractors for water work#.
The first of the series of Ivy Assemblies took place on Wednesday evening,' when there wa£> a large- attendant*. This season the committee hav# gener- 1 ously decided to run the assemblies in aid of tihe Waitara Municipal Brass Band, and I have no doubt that there will be a crowded house on eaoh ooeft-j sion. |
Mr J. G. Russell is again at the head of affairs, and is ably assisted by the' following committee: Mrs A. Andrews, 1 Missed Nicholls, Tate, Purdie, Jensen,! Badley and Messrs H. Spurdle, C. Tate and J. G. Russell (secretary). The ladies' first was -\v\on by Mir Kettle, and the second by Miss aii-| drews. The gentlemen's first prize was won by Mr Hart, and the second by Mr, S. George. |
The Waitara Municipal Band provided the music for the dances, and extra* were iplayed by Miss Sampson and Thomas. It is intended to run the Assembly every fortnight. j The annual meeting of th« Waitara Rifles was held on Monday evening,' The annual statement of accounts Showed a credit of £fl 18s 7d in the general account, end £ls 13s 9d b the capitations account. It was mentioned that the company was in a good financial position, the assets totalling £438 16s lOd and liabilities £173 13s 4d. The following committee were elected for the ensuing year: Col.-Sergt. Brab-| ant, Sergts. Jennins, Tate, Andrews and Corp. Andrews. The following shooting committee were elected: Sergt. Andrews, Bugler Tate, Privates) Chappell, Boffe, McKay and Clare. I A meeting of the North Taranaki Mounted Rifles was held on Thursday; cvenin'g, when the secretary submitted' a statement in connection with t/he late sports. The receipts from all sources [ amounted to £BB, and the expenses , £4O, leaving a credit balance of £28.1 | The result must be considered ver.v sat-' | isrfactory, and it is intended to hold the sport* in future on New Year's Day. j
