SUICIDE OF A YOUTH.
THE INQUEST,
'•YOU IIAVE TREATED ME LIKE A DOG." By Telegraph—Pres# A«oeiati<#n. Dunedin, Last Night. An inquest on the body of James Carter, aged nineteen years, who shot himself at Sawyer's Bay on Tuesday night, was held to-day. The evidence showed that the deceased had been hoarding some months ago with a woman named .Mrs' Ireland. He visited her house on the day of his death, and while she was out milking cows he shot himself with n pea rille.
Til the course of her evidence Mrs Ireland said deceased always came as an ordinary visitor. She did not, until about three weeks ago. know that there was -a scandal about deceased coming to her house. Deceased told her his mother hful "kicked him out" of his home.
Mr Platts read the following note found in deceased's pocket and addressed to Mrs Ireland: "You have been very funny this last two days, and I can stand it 110 longer. You have treated me like a dog, so I am better dead. Yours no
longer—Jas. Carter." Witness sftid there were 710 grounds whatever for deceased writing that note. The only explanation witness could make of the memo, found l on deceased was that she had told him not to come to her house again, as his mother objected. Other evidence was 'given to the effect that Mrs Ireland was a respectable, hard working woman, who supported her five children solely by her own exertions. A verdict was' returned that deceased died from a bullet wound in the right temple, inflicted by means of a pea rifle.
