CRICKET.

The Hawke's Bay Cricket Association have fallen upon exceedingly unfortunate luck in consequence of the bad weather necessitating the abandonment of the visit of the Australian Eleven to Napier, says a writer in the Napier Herald. The position is rendered much worse owing to the uncompromising attitude of the NeAV Zealand Cricket Council, as reflected by the secretary of that tody. When the weather conditions made it apparent that there was little or no prospect of the match being .played this week, as set down in the itinerary, the Hawke's Bay Association (who are committed to a guarantee of £75) took the earliest opportunity to endeavour to save the situation by at once getting into touch with the secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, with a view of preventing the expenses of the team travelling to Napier, or, as an alternative, to have the match .postponed till Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, but all overtures were repulsed, until on Thursday morning (following an-, urgent telegram from the secretary of the Hawke's Bay Association, .pointing out the hopelessness of the match taking place on its advertised dates), the secretary intimated that it would be abandoned, tout that the Hawke's Bay Association would still be held to their guarantee.. This dictum is resented by the Hawke's Bay Association, who gave the guarantee distinctly on the understanding that a match should take place. In view ef the circum'stanceS'that the Australians did not travel to Napier, that the match was prevented by circumstahcea over whieh the local association had no control, and that therefore comparatively trifling expense was incurred by the New Zealand Cricket Council over this particular match, the Hawke's Bay Association are entitled to a refund of their guarantee, and in this they will Burely have the support of the other associations. Certainly, looking at the course of events, the attitude of the secretary of the Cricket Council seeii:s to he open to question. j
