SUBMARINE ERUPTIONS
CHEAT WAThRSPOCTS AT KAWIIIA RED AND HIACK MUD. By Cable.—Press Association.—Coi.'vri'.dit Auckland. East NL'ht. Submarine eruptions have been occurring lately in the vicinity of Kawhia. at a point between Albatross Point., and Canned Island. About live have now occurred, and those who have witnessed them state that the matter is thrown up as high as the mast of a schooner. That the disturbance is considerable is shown by the fact that the beach yo: about twelve miles in length is covered with red and black mu.l and deep sea shells after each eruption;' added to which, the smell of sulphur is unpleasantly strong. Captain Liddle. who lives three miles away and is an invalid, is able to tell by the strong smell of sulphur when tnere has been another eruption. There is a hot s.pruur near knwma harbor, but so far this has not sho-.-:i an-.- increase in volntue when these eruptions o.ctir; and yet this same spring on the bench showed great activity during the recent eruption of Ngauruhoe.
