The crew of the barque Lonsdale, 1700 tons, 'belonging to Messrs Iredale and 'Porter, Liverpool, and commanded by Captain Dagwell, who arrived in Belfast recently from South America, told a thrilling story of the vessel's voyage from Hamburg to Mazatlan. Leaving the former port on May 28 last terrific weather wag encountered off Cape Horn, and the barque put into Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, with her forestay and headgear carried away. After repairs the vessel put to sea, but when three hours out it 'was discovered that she was on fire in three different places, evidently the result of incendiarism. The Lonsdale's head was immediately turned towards Port Stanley. Every effort was made to subdue the fire," but it continued to gain, whereupon Captain Dagwell ran the barque for the nearest land, and beached her. Some of the crew reached the shore in the boats and other* swam ashore. Captain Dagwell is remaining with the ship for salvage purposes, but the greater part of the crew re-shipped in a vessel which called for water. A.reward has .been offered for information leading to the arrest, of the supposed incendiaries.
