Wellington* April ik e The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, April 2, is' as follows: —• 'ilutton.—Market quiet but steady; holders firm in anticipation of moderate shipments; average (price of Canterbury mutton is 4y 2 d .per lb, North telaad, 4 Lamb. Market firm, althugh supplies are increasing: average price of Canterbury is sy z d per lb, other New Zealad lamb 5%dBeef. —Market steady; stocks of New Zealand beef on hand light; holders not anxious to sell. Supplies of American chilled beef large. The Marathon arrived during the week with a second shipment preserved by the Linley process, of Queensland chilled beef, which was' landed in fair condition and realised about 3%d per lb for hindquarters. Average price to-day for hindquarters frozen meat, New Zealand beef, is 4%d per lb, forequarters 4%d. Butter.—Market firm, with good demand, but buyers are cautious; average price for week for choicest New Zealand is 122s', Australian and Argentine 120s, Danish 128s, Siberian 119 s.
Cheese—Market firm, although liigh prices are restricting business'; average price New Zealand finest white cheese is 62s 6d, coloured 61a. Hemp. —Market very unsettled, with poor local demand; ipros>peots are uncertain and depend entirely upon Manila; average price New Zealand goott fair hemp on spot is £24 10s a t»B, fair £23 10s; same prices for forward on »pot, £23 for forward shipment; Manila output for week was 28,000 bales.
