DISTRICT NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondents.) WAREA Settlers have been busy these last fe\< (lavs running about their neighbors' paddocks looking for the iron off their sheds, and going to the timber yard to get new timber, while the local storekeeper is kept busy in supplying nails. "It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good." Since my last report i have gathered further information regarding the damage done by Wednesday's gale. On the Warea road Mr. John Lawn's house was stripped of its roof, and the verandah in front of the house was carried away. Mr. Percy Putt's house was partly unroofed. Mr, G. E. Julian's cowshed was injured, and .Mr. T. W. Raven's cowshed 011 the Newall road was taken up bodily by the wind. Mr. E. Aylward lost some cattle with falling trees, and Mrs. Murphy found one of her eows in the bush with a large tree lying across it. The tree was removed but the cow is about doomed. Mr. James Burgess' beautiful garden and orchard suffered severely, the trees being considerably knocked about. The house was covered up with the large willow trees which had fallen across it, the owner having to chop the trees away before he could get into the house. At Punilio the gale seems to have done a considerable amount of damage to cowsheds and other buildings, orchards and plantations. Where Mr. ISoardman is living large pine trees were blown over, 'while the telegraph lines in the vicinity were considerably damaged. The concrete chimney at the Puniho school was blown down, Para Ruakera's verandah was taken off the house and the brick chimney was blown down. Mr. Grant lost heavily. The pines at Mr. .Stevenson's were blown down. There has been no wire communication at all on the coast since Tuesday last, and it is very inconvenient. On til;? Punilio road one man lost several cows through trees falling on them, and the road was blocked for traffic for a time owing to large rata trees coming down. On Thursday morning a large rata tree fell between two milk carts that were on their way to the factory. Nearly everybody in the district has suffered. TARIKI. The late storm which wrought such havoc in some parts was not felt so severely in this locality, and no great amount of damage was done. There, is no sign of any steps being taken towards re-building the hotel, and the general opinion is that it is high time there were, as the want of proper accommodation in the township is much felt. Feed is still plentiful, and the milk supply consequently is keeping up well. The turnips, which were recently looking rather sickly, seem to be recovering, and there is still hope for fair crops. The judging of the field crops for the Tariki Horticultural Society prizes will take place towards the end of the month, and should prove interesting, as a good number of entries have been received. A mild sensation was caused at the cheese factory early on Sunday morning by the appearance of a well-known townsman togged out in genuine farmer's rig and with horse, cart and milk all complete. However, on being interviewed. he confessed he had not turned "cocky." but was merely taking charge for Mr. Harry Kerr during his absence m Auckland."
