"WITHOUT ENCUMBRANCE."
THE SPECTATUR AND SOCIALISM. "A DELUSIVE ALIAS." 'Jy Cable —Press Association —€o;n right Received April 3, 5 p.m. 1 London, April 2. The Spectator says that population is the principal element of Australian prosperity* and defence. It is some satisfaction to know that public opinion in Sydney is not quite easy about the situation.
Married couples with families are naturally not welcomed on stations ■worked on the line suggested by the Rev. Mr. Matthews in his letter. Taxing employers out of existence would not benefit married couples wishing to retain both situations and children. More considerate treatment of managers and working by joint stock companies and non-resident squatters would probably •in the end yield better servants and larger profits.
At the bottom of half the economic troubles whereof we hear so much lies excessive taxation on behalf of socialism; otherwise called social reform, protection, or some equally delusive alias. Until the error was corrected the mischief mentioned has a poor chance of abatement.
