A "NEWS'" FUNCTION

Forsaking for once the "atone" round which printers are wont to gather for their festivities, their welcomes, their presentations, or congratulations, the literary, commercial, and mechanical staffs of the Taranaki Daily News, at the invitation of the proprietor, assembled in the Imperial Hotel diningroom on Saturday evening. The objects of the gathering' were fourfold—firstly, to farewell Mr. James MeLeod, subeditor, and Mr. fleorge Slade. the job printer, who have acquired an 'interest in the firm of Messrs. J. Hooker and •Co.: to extend good wishes to Mr. C. M. Hill, head of the ''business end" of the establishment, upon the near approach of his marriage; to welcome three new members of the staff; and to celebrate the paper's fifty-third birthday. Mr. T. C. List, the proprietor and editor, presided. Presentations were made on behalf of the firm and staff, to Mr. 'MeLeod, a handsome 400-day clock; to Mr. Slade, a chased silver match-box; and to Mr. Hill a large oil painting of "Dusky Sound." Mr. List made the presentations, and, whilst keenly regretting the departure of Mr. MeLeod from the ranks of the News staff, assured him of a permanent place in the regard of f he companionship, for the tie could not be broken, and wished hira every success in his new undertaking. F.oth lie and Mr. Slade had been hard workers, rind they were bound to make .•their new venture prosper. To Mr, Hill the warmest felicitations were extended Shv the chairman and various members of the staff, who also endorsed the regret felt at the loss of the other two suests.
