HILLSBOROUGH. , (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual concert in aid of thfc school prize fund came oil' on Monday nigh., and the hull, although a spacious one, »,as simply crowded, ninny not being able to get -seats. Visitors came from Xe\v Plymouth, Waitara, IngleJ wood, Oakura, Bell Block and surrounding districts, and such remarks as these were numerous: "Splendid!" "First rate!" "Grand!" and they were indeed not at all out of place, for the children . richly deserved all the praise they got, and they did credit to their very abl« teacher, Miss Stephen, who is to be commended on the state of efficiency to wkich she had brought her pupil?. Where all did so remarkably well it would be invidious to particularise. The part songs, choruses, drill and dialogues showed very careful and experienced training, and the rounds of applause that greeted the different items was ample proof that the efforts were appreciated. At the close of the concert the chairman (Mr. j. R. Hill) called for three hearty cheers for the children and three for the teachers, which were most heirtilv responded to. The sum of .£l3 6s Gd was taken at the door—not bad for a country concert. Of course a dance followed, and very excellent music was provided bv Miss Bishop (piano), Mr. Tunbridge (picolo) and Master Bishop (violin), who. although quite a lad, gives promise of be. coming a very good musician. Messrs E. Lock and Lewis Bishop made verv efficient Masters of Ceremonies. Appended is the programme:—Overture, Miss Bishop and Mr. Tunbridee; chorus. "Playmates," children; recitation, "The ; Little Dutchman," Dick Preston; solo, • "The Little Colonel," Alf. Bishop and *Co. ; chorus, "The Model Laundry , iMaids," girls; part song, "The Doll and the Kittens," children; recitation, "Get ■up and bar the door," Rina Thomason; . dialogue, "The Corse-I-Can Brothers," ! children; chorus, "John Brown," children; drill, "Garland Drill," children; recitation, "Biddy's Troubles," Ada Hale; , solo and chorus, "How I became an Inspector," P. Barriball; chorus, "Gipsies," girls; recitation, "The Irish Philosopher," A. Bishop; part song, "Come, Soft and Lovely Evening," children; recitation, "The Seven Ages of Smiling," Miss H. Bishop; chorus, "Wake up, ,Darkies," boys; dialogue, "A Rumpus on Gingerbread Hill," children; God Save the King. While the ladies of the district were preparing the refreshments so bountifully and srenerouslv nrovided bv them, Mr. Hill announced that he had a very pleasant little ceremony to perform, on behalf of the School Committee and teacher?, by presenting to 'Mis* Hilda Bishop a cold brooch, as a small token of appreciation of her services alwn.vs so "heprfnlVv and .willinsrlv <?iven. and more particularly in connection the ji .present concert.
