FAMOUS SCIENTIST DEAD.

Alexander Agassiz. the distinguished scientist, was born at Neuchatel, Switzerland, sixty-six years ago, and went 'to the United States inlS4B. He was educated at Harvard University and elsewhere, and became an assistant coast surveyor. He was subsequently superintendent of great copp«r mines at Lake Superior, and surveyed Lake Utica in Peru. He took part in Government dredging expeditions, explored the coral reefs of the Hawaiian Islands, the great Barrier reefs of Australia, made researches in Fiji, Florida, Bahama, the Panama regions, Cuba* Jamaica, etc. He held honors and distinctions from every scientific body of repute in the world, was a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor of. France, and was the author of many scientific works.
