THE ISLANDS' HURRICANE
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE.
By Cable.—Prsss Assoeiatdpn.—Copyright Sydney, Mareh 30. Private cables from • Fiji show that fears -as to the extent of the damage by the hurricane are unfounded. The damage is chiefly confined to Suva and the vicinity. Levuka, Ba, Lautoka and Taviuni escaped damage, but it will be a few days before the effect, if any, on the outlying islands' is known. A hurricane raged at Noumea on Sunday, causing great damage. Houses were unroofed, telephone lines blown down and roads washed away by the high sea. The German gunboat Cormorant lost several boats in the gale. DAMAGE AT SUVA. MISSION BUILDINGS DESTROYED. Received March 31, 1.40 a.m. Sydney, March 30. The secretary of the Methodist Mission has received a cable from Suva announcing that great damage has been done to the mission buildings. Thtre are a number of casualties, but no fatalities. The damage, so far as' is' known, is estimated at £3OOO.
