THE ELIXIR OF LIFE.
The fallacious doetr.'ne *■ "too old at forty" hag not been • dvauced very emphatically during tho la»i year or two. The London eorrespor.deo i of tho Lyttelton Timet mentions two instances that would answer any ary.jEftut based on the idea that a mat «t»s&! to be an effective worker whin !?' reaches Ms fifth decade. Sir Hirc.ni Maxim, the famous inventor, and Dr Furnivall, tii.< distinguished scholar loth celebrated their birthdays last :nouth. Sir Hiram, a mere youth of sevoity, got up at.6.30 a.m. and spent a six ten hour day in w»rk and recreation, wldut Dr. Furnivall, a middle-aged map ef eighty-five, ■pent'a good part of hi» c"ay in rowing •n the Thames and in entertaining young folks at his b'rthd..;.- party. The two men'were asked by » newspaper to supply their recipes for long life and success. Sir Hiram llaxun replied with the following rules •'f scuduet:—Avoid tobacco; avoid alcohrl; never waste a moment; always hi auuous to find something useful to d»: ''P accurate and persevering; rise early and retire to bed before midnight. "Ijio man who watches the clock i\ t'n iu» disaster," he added. "Every roa < leads somewhere; find lout where i' ends before you tread it. Don't be a mere copyist. Do something no one hj»« done before." Dr. Furnivall replied that the secret of a long life and a lw}"j-> career lay in never smoking, drinking, always having a hobby and reading and thinking. Eeadi'iy without thought was useless. The ba«:» of the recipes for the elixir of life is, in eaeh case, the nonuse of tobacco and alcohol. There are other ingredient" which may be added, so to speak, l 'i.c taste," but both these .wonderfu'lr old-young men are in agreement that n-cotina and al-ee-ho] are inimical to he. Uuv longevity. Possibly they are ri/ht, bat it is hard to avoid the suspicion *!v<r, the secret of their wonderful mental and physical Endurance is to be fouad rather in the individual than in their mode of life. Even if all men were t > follow faithfully the rules prescribed by Sir Hiram Maxim and Dr. Furnivd'l. the result would not be invariablv t!:» same. I
