PUNIHO TOLL GATE.
. : 1" To the Editor. Sir, —Re paragraph in the "New*" oi Tuesday last concerning motor cars pass ing through the Funiho toll-gate. Youi reporter makes me say that motor c&ri "rushed through without paying toll.' This is absolutely wrong, as so far dur ing my term here every motorist hai paid the toll. What I said was this: "Some cars are travelling at mighi minus! number and minus lights, and il is almost impossible to identify can rushing .past without a number, especial ly as there are often two or several cars alike in appearance travelling past here.' I only ask motorists to slow down at night to give one a show to identify them, if they have'previously paid toli. Oh, yes; I know all about "shutting the gate," but I do not desire to take that Tather extreme course, unless it becomes necessary. Then again, it is stated in another par that "the toll-keeper 'pleadingly' asks the chairman as to how much personal abuse he (the collector) should stand from the Maoris at night." Now, Sir, there was no thought or intention on my part to whine or plead in the matter. I simply asked, a straightforward question of the County Council. No, Sir, it is easy for a sleek reporter to "sling off" at a fellow in my position, but would the reporter take my place ■here for a month and do, not better, but as well as I have, managed to do? Fair plav is all that I ask—l am, etc., COLLECTOR, PUNIHO TOLL GATE.
