There were discordant voices in the House of Commons, and he was a hold man who would be certain vWir>v a majority was for or against > Budget. The veto legislation was t'ae stepping-stone 'to something bigger, i.e.. the reform of ' the 'Second Chamber. Liberals must not "ton at the veto, otherwise when the Conservatives returned to poWer they Vo'ild repeal the veto legislation. THE .CENTRE PARTY. PROTEST AGAINST A SECOND ELECTION. London, March 25. The newly-formed centre party of Unionists, of which Lord Cromer, Mr. Harold Cox, Sir Edward Stratchey, and Mr. St. Loe Strachey (editor of the Spectator) are leading members, has issued a manifesto protesting against another election. The document declares that though the last election was inconclusive regarding some questions it ic incumbent on the Government to safeguard the financial interests of the country and the national defence. PAYMENT OF INCOME" TAX. London, Mareh 25. Practically all the banks are following the example of the Bank of England, and are refunding income tax.
