THE NEW TIMETABLE. The decision of the Minister for Railways to practically revert to the old timetable between here and Wellington will be hailed with satisfaction by the people affected, and by none more than those of Taranaki. It was a mistake to have ever altered the okl timetable, which seemed to suit nearly everybody. A small but clamorous section wanted the one-day connection between here and Napier, but' even they never anticipated that to ibring it into being would mean the highly inconvenient service from which we have been suffering for the past three months. Unfortunately the Minister mistook their voice for that of the whole community. Had he given the matter a. little more attention and consulted the representative bodies, he would not have perpetrated the mistake lie did. As it is, however, he must be given credit for taking early steps to rectify his blunder. The arrival of the train at New iPlymouth at 7.55 should considerably help the steamer lervice. We only hope the traffic will be great enough to justify the running of the 'boats tri-weeklr throughout the winter. We certainly think the shipping companies would he consulting their own interests by givine the service a good trial in the winter, for travellers are heartilv sick of the overland train service, which will (be even less Attractive in the cold, months, and it is onlv a matter of a short tim ■ when a hi? proportion of them will return, to the old route.
