GOLF.

TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP. COMMENCES TO-DAY. The fifth annual Taranaki championship and handicap tournament commenced on the Ngamotn links this morning, and will be continued on Monday and Tuesday. There will be well over 50 competitors, including 43 for the Taranafei Amateur Championship, fifteen of whom are local golfers. The largest entry received for any event is 47. • Neither Auckland nor Wellington will be represented. The principal clubs sending players are as 1 follows:—Wanganu* 8, Feiiding 4, Waverley 4, Hawera 4, Inglewood 3, Whitara 1, and a strong Ngamotn representation. For last year's tournament 54 entries were received, the visitors including three from Auckland, twelve from Hawera, and seven from Wanganui. ' Play will commence this' morning ati 9 o'clock with the qualifying round of 36 holes of the championship, which embraces the teams' match. On Monday the second round of the championship will be played at 9 o'clock, and followed by a men's bogey handicap at 9.30. Two o'clock in the afternoon will see the start of the third round of the championship, while in the afternoon a men's medal handicap will be played, The final of the championship will be played at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, the other events for that day comprising a bogey handicap in the morning and a driving and approaching competition after the completion of the championship. A continuous putting competition will also be held. LADIES' MEETING. On Wednesday the Ngamotn ladies* tournament will be held, play extending over the one day. During the, men's tournament the ladies ill hold a continuous putting compel tion, for which special prizes will be given. Entries for this meeting close with Miss' Stephenson this evening.
