AN ESCAPEjE. By Telegraph.—Prm Association. Wellington, Last Nigh;.. The police are still searching for Jos. J. Powelka, who escaped from a cell in the Lambton Quay Police Station yesterday morning. Reports have come m from Waiwarra, Maranui, and other places, that a man answering his inscription hay been seen, but so far the police have been unable to run him to earth.
THE TAINUI FOR LONDON. Wellington, Thursday evening. There was a Jarge assemblage ol p«;uple at the Glasgow Wharf at midday to-day to witness the departure of the R.M.S. Tainui for London. The liner carries no fewer than 210 in all clas'ses, 40 first saloon, 72 so;ond saloon, and 98 third class, all her passenger accommodation having been engaged. Among the travellers "-are a'. rge number of New Zealanders who luvc selected the merry month of May as the day of their arrival in England on pleasure bent. The Tainui has a vtry heavy cargo of frozen meat, dairy produce, etc., and is in all respects a "full s'hip." She is due at Falmouth on the 6th May.
FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' ACT. 1 Dunedin. Last Night. At the annual conference of Foresters at Alexandra to-day, the following resolution was carried:—"That this meeting, representing 3500 Foresters of Otago and Southland, regret exceedingly that Parliament has excluded from the Friendly Societies' Act of 1909 the proposed sections 15 and 16, which appeared in the original Bill, such a step, in »**'■ opinion of this meeting, being disastrous to the best and most vital interests' of friendly society movements in 1W Zealand, especially as these sections received the almost unanimous support of the meet'ng of friendly society delegates' held at Wellington in 1906, and more especially as they were so strongly requested by the Government's own responsible officers and the Actuary of Friendly Societies, and that we combine with the 1.0.0. F. and M.U. 1.0.0. F. to bring the matter before the Minister in charge, and the members of Parliament for Otago and Southland with a view to having these sections made law by amending the Act next session, if possible." I THE OTAGO DOCK. i Dunedin, Last Night. 1 a meeting of the Dock Trust last night, the long standing dispute with Scott Rvos. over the construction of the dock was settled, the Trust agreeing to pay Scott Bros. £559 14s. This will clear the way for merging the Dock Trust into the Harbour Board. !
