The weather was perfect and the water smooth for the university boat race. Cambridge won' the toss and. chose the Middlesex side. The boats were level to the Craven steps, where Cambridge had a slight lead, but from Crabtree's to Harrod's Oxford pulling a long steady stroke, gradually overhauled their rivals and. s'hot Hammersmith Bridge three-quarters of a length ahead. After this they continued to increase their lead, despite Cambridge's plucky spurts. '
The official result was a win for Oxford by three and a half lengths. Time, 20min. 14sec.
Oxford won last year by three and a-half lengths. The record is now Oxford 35 wins, Cambridge 30, dead heat in 1877.
