A TIMELY RESCUE. The N.D.L. steamer Schlesien, now at Sydney, rescued the crew of a smiling dredge on the voyage out. The dredger Cerne, recently sold by the Mauritius' Government to the Bermuda Government, had left Capetown for Bermuda. When a few miles beyond Dassen Island it was found that she had sprung a leak, which was of such a serious character that the captain deemed it advisable to /return forthwith to Capetown, but sighted the North German Lloyd steamer Schlesien, and the latter was signalled, the captain immediately coming to the assistance of the Cerne. A line was got aboard, and the Cerne towed some distance, but it was soon seen that the Cerne was rapidly getting into a sinking condition, the waves washing over her in an ominous fashion, so that all hope of towing her to port had to be given up. The crew •wore then taken on board the Schlesien, and landed at Table Bay.
It is reported that Messrs J. P. Corry and Co., Ltd., of Liverpool, owners of the Star Line, are reported to have ordered a new vessel, which will be named the Star of India. She will be similar in design to the Star of Canada, the most recent addition to the fleet. »
