Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P. for Stratford, was in New Plymouth yesterday. Lord Plunket received a cable yesterday announcing the safe arrival m England of Lady Plunket. Mr. George Bishop has resigned his scat on the New Plymouth Borough Council, owing to his removal to Wellington. Professor Dickie, Professor of Theology at Knox College, Dunedin, was, states a Preds telegram, inducted last evening.

Mr. P. S. Whitcombe has again been appointed auditor of the school committees' accounts for the Taranaki Education Board. Mr. E. C. Gannawav, Assistant Postmaster, Wellington, will be Acting-Chief Postmaster at New Plymouth during the absence of Mr. Chaney on annual leave. . A London cable states that the improvement in the health of Lady Dudley, wife of the Governor-General of Australia, who recently underwent a serious operation, is well maintained. Mr. Frank Stevens, who was sergeantmajor in Captain Atkinson's company at the Waireka engagement, arrived in town by the express train last night, and is staying at the Grosrenor Hotel. The Education Board yesterday accepted the resignation of Mr. E. P. Fenton, art instructor at the New Plymouth and Stratford technical schools, and instructions were given to furnish him with a testimonial.

Among the passengers for Onehunga by the Rarawa last evening were Mr. and Mrs. 3. Teed and family, of New Plymouth, Mr. "VV. Fussell (representative of the New Zealand Shipping Company at Waitara), and Mr. A. G. Bennett, of Manala.

The death occurred at Xebon yesterday of Captain Humphreys, an old resident of the city, at the age of 87. Captain Humphreys (states a wire from Nelson) rose from the ranks, and saw much service in India, and possessed several decorations. A meeting of Palmerston North citizens decided to make a presentation to Mrs. Stagpoole on Saturday night, in appreciation of the services of Police Sergeant Stagpoole, who is being moved to Oamaru. Professor" Bilhorn, musical conductor, who was to have accompanied them, -was prevented from doing so by ill-health. In reference to the Press Association wire that the Rev. Gray Dixon, of Auckland, has teen called to succeed the Rev. I. Jolly at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Palmerston North, the sessions clerk here (says a Press wire from Palmerston North) lias authorised the statement that no such call has been made, and no congregational meeting ;o make the call lias yet been held.
