EDUCATION BOARD.

THE MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board held its usual monthly meeting last night. .Present: Messrs. Jtuncs \Y T ade (chairman), A. Morton, W. L. Kennedy, A H. Halcombe, W. Rogers. H. Trimble, \v! 0. C'argill, James Young, and G. A. Adlam, THE CADET CAMP. Major landlord, officer commanding Ao> 1 Taranaki battalion of school cadets, furnished a report in reference to the Jutciieiier camp at Lower Hutt. »*'» ail 'angenients 011 both journeys, he reported, were very good. Three boys were urnvell before the train reached Aramoho, and lie had to call m the camp doctor to five boys durinj? he camp The doctor's report'vas that two of these should not have been al■iTf ,n."°; However, he put them light, iho food supplied was good, and sufficient in quantity. He regretted to have to linortn the Hoard that on the . mol m'ig (Thursday) a delay 0 f an hour and a-half occurred in receiving the rations for the battalion. On being in ormed of tins, he at once interviewed Major McDonald, who took instant steps to remedy the matter, and they had no further dilliculty in that matter. Heavy rain set in at midnight of Thursday, ■ nd early on I-riday morning a number ot our tents were flooded. and the cadets ook shelter in the grandstand, where they were dry. Fortunately it was a warm ram, and continently the cadets not a,lffe r any serious effects. Arrangements were made by Major McDon. a d for No*. 1 and 2 battalions to occupy he Hutt drillshed immediately after Hie parade for Lord Kitchener, to which e marclitd the battalions immediately they were dismissed. On arrival, they found plenty of dry straw and a good hot tea ready. A romp soon wanned and set up the cadets. «nd everything possible was done to dry the clothes. He had to thank a lady at the Hutt for her kind offer to take sick bovs but only one .boy was sent, all the 'others being well. H e had to report that all the offices with him were most attentive to the lads during the trying time, and the fuct that all were brought back without harm would, hp thought, convince the Poard of their loyaltv to their charges. They all desired to thank the Department and the Board for giving them an opportunity of seeing the man who had done so much for our Enwire. It might interest the Board to know that he had received from headquarters, and also from private sources, the fact that the Tarannld cadets carried themselves well enough to draw a good opinion from the Field-Marshal.

Major Stratford, commanding the No. 2 battalion (Stratford, inglewood, and Ngaere), also submitted a report setting out the opinions of his officers as follow:—(a) The train arrangements suited the battalion splendidly; (b) the tent n"c>mmodation was ample for the battalion: (e) the sanitary arrangements were not good; (d) provisions on the first morning were short, but after that arrangements were considerably improved; (e) henvv rain on the Friday marred the usefulness and pleasure of the camp; (f) Major McDonald is deserving of tlia niv's both for supper to the battalion on its arrival in camT> and for nrovidintr such excellent accommodation when rain had set in. FRANKLEY SCHOOL. Messrs. A. C. Downes and E. N. L. Okev, chairman and secretary respectively of the Frankley school committee, waited on the Board -with a request for a grant or a subsidy towards the cost of levelling the site for the new •chool and improving the playground generally, as well as for the Board to give them the old school building, which the committee proposed to convert into a gymnasium. In the discussion which followed, Mr. Morton said that the site of the present school was the only satisfactory site for the new school, and the Board could not ask the committee to prepare the site. If the Board was building a school it must -illso prepare the site. Upon his motion, seconded by Mr. Rogers, the following resolution was carried:—"That, provided tile Frankley committee will at their own cost remove the present school building and fit it as a gymnasium and shelter shed, the Board will defray the cost, not exceeding £SO, of lowering the site for the new building." INGLEWOOD TECHNICAL CLASSES. Messrs. Whitehead, chairman, and A. F. Thomson and Hood, members of the Inglewood school committee, waited on the Board <\vith reference to the plans of the Inglewood technical building, and suggested several modifications of the plans submitted by the Board's architect, the tenders for which were considerably above the amount available. These modifications, whilst not reducing the size of the building, would probably bring the amount down to the sum available. They pointed out that there was a lot of useless ornamentation, and there were manv things that could be cut out without detracting from the stability or usefulness of the building. They believed that the money available was quite enough to build a school to meet the requirements.

Tt was decided to c-"ifor with the architect.
