ALLEGED KIDNAPPING.
IN THE SOUTH SEAS. A LIBEL ACTION. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received March 22, 9.50 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. Captain John Strachan, a well-known master mariner, has commenced an action against the proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald, claiming £SOOO damages for libel. The alleged libel is contained in statements said to have been made by Dr. frmer, Consul-General for Germain - , and published in the Herald of 17th May last. The article was headed "Alleged Kidnapping," and referred to a voyage of Strachan in the ketch Envy, charging Strachan with recruiting natives of Tobi Island under promise of returning them to their homes, which promise, the article alleged, he failed to keep. The article also alleged that Strachan had used efforts to induce Tobi Islanders to replace the German flag with the British. Captain Strachan's reply is a denial of the charges. He had taken the Tobi ■boys for trips in the Envy on their free will to get knowledge of the world, but had not kidnapped'or recruited them. He also denied the flag incident.
