A ROYAL ROMANCE
King Albert has given his'consent to the marriage of Princess Clementine, King Leopold's youngest daughter, to Prince Victor -Napoleon. This is the happy sequel of a Royal romance (writes the Chronicle's Brussels correspondent). The Prince has lived in Brussels as an exile for many years. He met the young and 'beautiful Princess six years ago and asked for her hand; but King Leopold refused on diplomatic grounds, although the French Government made no objection to the marriage. The late King argued that he would not allow the union of his daughter to the Republic's enemy, as the Prince was pretender to the French throne in the Imperialist interest. The lovers remained faithful to each other, and a touching incident occurred last year at a paper hunt. Prince Victor Napoleon won the first pr ze, which was pinned on lis shoulder by the Princess, who could not conceal her emotion. The marriage will take place in the autumn. Princess Clementine is very popular. Prince Victor Napoleon Bonaparte (known as the "Pretender") is, in his 48th year, and is the sole representative of the junior branch of his family, being descended from Prince Jerome, King of Westphalia, the younger brother of the great founder of the family. He was nominated by the late Prince Imperial in his will as his successor to the French throne. The Prince is described as a handsome man, tall, well made, and with the typical features and physique oi a 'soldier. Prince Victor left Paris ,in 1884 in consequence or a law banishing the members of his family from France, and established himself in a modest way in Brussels, where he has since led a somewhat secluded and studious life. The Daily Mail states that the question of this marriage was first raised five years ago, but the projeet met'with violent opposition from King Leopold, who went to the point of imprisoning bis daughter for a time. Prince Victor has for long lived at Brussels, and at one time frequented the Belgian Court. He has three children, offspring of a morganatic union. The Prince is extremely wealthy, and will, it is expected, inherit the major portion of the Empress Eugenie's fortune. He has a splendid house in the Avenue Louise.
