The case in which Albert Ernest Louis Bertling, the superintendent of the Wei- i lington Zoo, claimed £2OOO damages for j libel from John Norton, proprietor of' the newspaper "New Zealand Truth," ] was) concluded to-day in the Supreme I Court, after a three days' trial. Tl a | jury found that the plaintiff had been , libelled, and awarded him -tiIOOO. The, jury was an hour considering its verdict. The jury added to its verdict a I rider that the evidence had not only j failed to establish the charges against! the plaintiff, but had fully proved hi« | competency for the post he holds. Jullgmrnt was entered for the plaintiff fori £IOOO damages. An order was' granted j to stay the execution for four days,' pending an application for a new trial on the grounds of misdirection by his Honor the Chief Justice, before w"hom (and a special jury) the case wa* heard.
