At the conference of Chambers of Commerce a discussion took place ou tariff retorm, when 51 Chambers declared iu favour of it and 12 against or neutral. Received March 18, 9.45 p.m. London, March 18. In the Chambers ol Commerce vote on tariff reform 12 were against the motion and 41 were neutral. GERMAN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. Received March 18, 10.35 p.m. Berlin, March 18 Lieutenant Filchner's expedition to the Antarctic leaves Germany in the summer. ST. PATRICK'S DAY. Received March 18, 10.35 p.m. London, March 18. The Queen presented shamrocks tx the Irish Guards at Aldershot. Treioil was distributed among many London hotels and charitable institutions. AMERICAN SUGAR TRUST. Received March 18, 10.20 p.m. New York, March 18. Owing to the fines inflicted on the American Sugar Trust, their operations for 1909 show a deficit of £28,000, de spite a record year's business. THE DECIMAL SYSTEM. Received March 18, 9.45 p.m'. London, March 18. The Associated Chambers' of Commerce, by a small majority, recommended that a decimal system of coinage should be made compulsory. . THE STEEL TRUST. New York, March 17. The American Steel Trust reports an increase of £8,000,000 sterling iu it 3 net earnings in 1909 as compared with 1908. POSTURE AND IMPOSTURE. London, March 17. Ferdinand Eggena and his wife, La Milo, the well-known Music Hall posturer, have been committed for trial on a charge of obtaining £7OOO worth oi jewels from a Wood Street jeweller bv false pretences. The cross-examina-tion of the witnesses suggests that the defence will be that prisoners obtained the jewels which form the subject of the charge against them for (he purpose of selling them to the King of Portugal's suite during his recent visit to London. SIR GEORGE REID. London, March 17. In response to municipal invitations, Sir G. H. Reid has arranged to pay visits to Glasgow, Birmingham, Bristol and Bath during April. WANTED POPULATION.
