The wicket was dead and the outfield very slow after the rain. Sims and Midlane were the lifttsmen and Whitty and Kelleway bowled. P'ly opened very cautiously, the batsmen taking 110 risks, finding a difficulty in driving the ball any distance along tk« dead turf. Five overs produced six runs, and in the first eleven overs there were six maidens. Whitty was bowling with one man on the on-side. At 222, when 21 runs had been added to Saturday's score, Sims was smartly caught at the wickets of! Whitty. 222 o —ll. . | MacFarlane followed and the score was unaltered when Hopkins bowled ; Midlane. 2226 —47. Oliff joined MacFarlane, who 'lit Whitty to leg for four. Mayne ; lifted the fourth ball over the boundary for six. Siedeberg had a chance of running Bardsley out, hut misfielded. Fifteen minutes' play produced 22 runs', .Mayne having hit hard for nineteen, , Mayne pasted Reese, getting three fours in one over. At 35, of which Mayne had contributed 32, Bennett replaced Oliff and Howden took Reese's place. Both got a better length than the opening bowlers. New Zealand bowling, with fclie exception of that of Bennett, was l made to look very simple by the fine bammg of Mayne. Bennett, however, bowled splendidly, and while the batsmen were making the runs at the rate of one hundred iper hour. Bennett sent ilcwn 7.5 overs for 15 runs and a wicket.
