REGULATING PIG-STYES

AN UNDESIRABLE PRACTICE.

, j Regular road travellers will appreciate action of Mr. F. B. Gardiner, the ' district health inspector, who drew the [ i attention of the Elt'bam County Council j the other day to a practice prevalent in" | the county of settlers building pig-styes ' „on portions of their own sections abut- [! ,ting 011 to public roads. Whilst it ; | would be difficult to prove that any j such case gave rise to conditions such , as 'would produce ill-health, yet the practice was capable of giving rise to considerable nuisance from bad smells arising from the pig-styes, and the barrels of skim-milk, etc., stored near by. It was generally held that within a liun- ! dred feet of a dwelling-house or road (was the minimum of proximity th;it I should lie allowed, and he wou.d like the j Council to say whether they desired I him to enforce such restriction. I The chairman thought that if it were 1 contrary to the Act for the pig-styes to !be adjacent to a roadway the health ! officer should attend to the matter. ; That Was what the health officer was i paid foT. j Cr. Pease said as far as tho general ' public was concerned it was disagreeable. There was plenty of room on the sections, and the pig-styes should be moved further hack. j Cr. Belcher thought tha practice of ' fixing styes near the roadway was more prevalent in the district that in any other part of New Zealand. The clerk explained that the Council as local health authority must adopt the health officer's recommendations. | The chairman said the officer had betj ter go on his own in this matter, and explained that action on the part of j himself or other councillors might be construed by some ratepayers as due to personal feeling. , On the motion of Crs. Best and Philips, it was decided, That tho wonlimit be enforced as recommended by the Health Department.
