MAIL FACILITIES.

BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND EUROPE. By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyrignv Melbourne, March 15. The Postal Department is considering a Colonial Office dispatch _ dealing with the question of the opening of the Trans-Andine railway. It also suggests a shorter mail route between Australia and England. It is estimated that mails from Sydney could be landed at Sydney in twenty-seven days-. AUCKLAND'S OPINION. •Jty Telegriir".—AwintTnn Auckland, Las't Night. In reference to the London cable concerning the suggested mail route via the Trans-Andean railway, inquiries made. amongst Auckland commercial people elicited the information that any route which will shorten communication with London will naturally be welcomed, hut at the same time it is felt that the route via South America will not compare with those via 'Frisco or Vancouver. At Valparaiso there is no harbour, and ships have to s'tand out in the open roadstead. There are no trade prospects to be considered, as wheat, and minerals are the main exports from Chilian ports. From Wellington to Monte Video (sic) over the present trade route the distance is 5975 miles', «nd with an added train journey of some 1500 miles across South America, it is not considered that the saving will lie very great.
