HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The following cablegram lias been received from the High Commissioner, under date 12th March:— Mutton.—The market is firm. There is a goo.l demand for prime quality. Holders are not anxious to sell. The average orice for Canterbury mutton is 4%d. For North Island lamb the market is firm, there being a good demand for nil lamb for Easter. Supplies will be moderate. Canterbury lamb is averaging 5%d, and other New Zealand sV4<l. Beef.—The market is quiet. Holders are firm. The demand is fair. New Zealand hindquarters 3V>d. forequarters 3y 4 d. Butter.—The market is very firm. The demand has been exceptional, and exceeds the supply. The stock of New Zealand butter to hand is almost exhausted, being firmly held in second hands. The average price for choicest New Zealand butter is 130s per cwt, Australian and Argentine 1265, Danish T36s, Siberian 1255. Cheese.--The market is firm. Prices have advanced, and buyers are cautious. New Zealand white cheese averaging 61s, colored 59s 6d. Hemp.—The market is lifeless, there being.no change in prices. The stock of New Zealand hemp in hand is 108 tons. The week's output of Manila hemp was 19,000 bales. Last wek's quotations were: Spot New Zealand, good to fair, £25, fair £24: Manila fair £24 15s, forward fair £23 15s. Cocksfoot Seed. —The market is quiet | but firm. Stocks in hand are moderate. • New Zealand bright clean 171b seed 725. Kauri Gum.—The market is firm, with an improved demand. Ordinary to fair three-quarter-scraped £8 10s per cwt; ■ fair half-scraped £5 as; bush fair to good, pale and amber scraped, £8 10s; / brown, half to three-quarter scraped, 92s 6d; brown pickings, common to good, 455. Wheat. The market is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker. Oats.—The market is quiet, small business doing. The tendency is in ' favor of buyers. New Zealand sparrowbills ex granary 19s per quarter of 3841b; New Zealand Danish 17s 3d per quarter of 3201b. Peas.—The market is steady without animation. New Zealand partridge 55s per 5041b. Beans.—The market is firm owing to the reduced supplies. New Zealand beans, old crop, 40s fid per 5041'0. Hops. ~ The market remains firm, j firm. There is generally an active dej mand, and the prospects are favorable.
River Plate meat arrivals.—The arrivals of River Plate mutton and lamb j at Unite 1 Kingdom ports during Febi huary were as follows:—London, carcases of mutton 411,877, lamb 3482: Liverpool, 175,093 and 8871; Hull, 1043 and 1152; Cardiff, 8438 and 987; Southampton, 5043 and 5(380; Irish ports, 3437 and 44; total carcases of mutton 230,931. carcases of lamb 18.222. The arrivals during February of 1909 were: Carcases of mutton 311.5(11, carcases of lamb 90,233. , LONDON MARKETS. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report hiving received the following cable messages from their London house under date of 'the 10th mst.:— ' Frozen meat--A good demand exists for all descriptions. Trices for New Zealand lamb are unchanged, but Australian lamb rules y s d higher. Canterbury mutton is firm at last quotations, but New Zeala-ml North Island .and Australian are %d higher. Prices for Lsef are y+dt higher. Wool —Sales continue firm and lately reported i-a«.es are fully maintained. Continental and English buyers are the principal operators, American buyers hardly doing anything. Decline is chiefly on crossbred wools, greasy, medium and coarse qualities, suitable for America. Tallow—Prices are pay to Gd higher. Advance is chiefly on low and inferior qualities. v Rabbitskins—]few Zealand re" skins "are 5 per cent, higher, other descriptions 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, higher. Furriers liuving freelv, even the lower qualities: 1270 bales were oifercd and practically all sold.
