BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Mr. G. Tiseh and Councillors Dockrill. Bellringer, Wilson, Watkins, Hookey and Browne. v THE OLD WATERWORKS.

The Mayor reported to the Council .that Mr. Stanley Smith had informed <him that there was a huge stream 01 water flowing from the old waterworks .reservoir, an<t he also believed that tlie -water from it was going into the town mains. His Worship had explained that this water did not come into the town mains, but was kept only as an emerjgiency supply in the event of a big conflagration in town. He asked the engineer if it was a iact that the Council was losing a large volume of water, as alleged.—Mr. Kendall said that when he •was last at the old waterworks the escape was not serious. It was due to a leaky valve, and he had thought it rather beneficial as tending to keep the water sweet—ln a further discussion, in answer to the Mayor, Councillor Bellringer (Superintendent of the Fire Board) said the old reservoir was no •-longer necessary, for the by-pass gave an extra 101b pressure, and that was all •that the old supply could give.—The engineer pointed out, however, that in the r eyent of a big Are, and the consequent big rush of water being likely to bloek _the screens, this auxiliary supply might "prove invaluable.—Engineer to report. THE WATER SUPPLY. Cr. Bellringer asked the Mayor if lie -was aware that occasionally the water was being turned through the by-pass into the reservoir without coming through the filters, which meant that the town was being supplied with unfiltered water. The engineer explained •that during the Christmas week the reservoir was cleaned out and, in order, to bring it up to a normal level in reasonable time the water had been turned into the by-pass. As far as he knew the practice was not usual.—The engineer to report. ABATTOIRS.
