SEQUEL TO A DUEL. • •'■; Berlin, March 13. An English student named Payne,;at Freiberg, in Saxony, was sentenced ' to four months' imprisonment and fined 850 marks for fighting a duel and resisting arfest. The affair originated over a quaTrel in a cafe with a lieutenant in the army, who drew his sword, Payne struck him and a duel followed. The lieutenant was cashiered. THE TOBACCO MONOPOLY. ■' New York, March 13. An inquiry at Washington, instituted by the Government, shows that since 1897 the Tobacco Trust has absorbed jr crushed 163 out of 253 independent factories. THE KIEL DOCKYARDS. Berlin, March 13. A mass meeting of workmen in the Kiel dockyards demanded the introduction of short time in preference to the dismissal of a large number of men, as announced by ! the authorities. MOTORING FATALITY. Berlin. March 13. Mr Oeiger, Argentine Consul at Munich, was killed by his motor car crashing into a tree. His wife, the Paraguayan Consul, and the chauffeur were all severely injured. London, March i 3. A Renter's telegram from Allahabad states that Count Demmidre has bousrht twelve first-class Australian polo ponies, which he intends to take to England.
