Bates' summary and forecast are: The barometer has fallen lowest in the neighbourhood of Cook straito during the past 24 hours, and lieavy rata has) been experienced in many parts southward of New Plymouth and Napier. Northerly winds, moderate to strong, have prevailed northward of Kawhia and Napier, and -westerlies, strong to a gale, elsewhere. Present indications are for a westerly gale northward of Kawhia and Napier, and south-easterly elsewhere. Heavy rain is probable generally, and especially on the west coast of the North 3feland and the east coast of the South with rivers flooded. The barometer should soon rise fast.
