SUGGESTED TERMINUS OF THE ONGARUE RAILWAY. The raranaki Chamber 01 Commerce last nijjlit waxed hilarious for a time upon tie reading of a letter, typewritten on one of the Kaponga Town Board's printed letter headings, and signed by "R. G. r ook, clerk," asking the Chamber to co-operate with tlie Board in pressing the claims of Kaponga to be mads the terminus of the Ongarue railway, now Sunder construction. The letter concluded: ''Please consider the question," he wrote ; "and. if agreeable, advise as 1 to what you consider the best course to purple to obtain the desired end." The members were divided into three camps, One section looked upon the letter n-, a huge joke, and laughed. Another party treated it as the serious # r oullit ; o'fi of this recent addition to the ever-growing ranks of local bodies, and looked startled. And others questioned 1 whether the letter had been read aright. I One member remarked something to the effect that the letter had arrived some twenty-one days early, whilst another ejaculated, •'Pretty hard on Opuj nake!" However, Mr. Penn soon got nis ' team in hand again, and it was decided to replv to the effect that the Chamber will be prepared to consider KapongaV claims when the "Opunake" railway question is next under review.
