The Rosamond, which was due here yesterday morn>ng, was delayed in the I soiiih, unci was consequently late in getting into port. She has a cargo of 190 tons and this morning she discharges She vi!l be despatched for Onehunga at noon. At the northern port sh? will load 7500 crates of cheese and returns to New Plymouth on Sunday. On Monday she will take aboard another TOSO crates of cheese, and leaves afterwards i'iT Wellington, where she tranships her cargo to the liner Devon. [ LUSITANIA AND MAURETANIA. Some interesting facts have been collected regarding the recent peribrmances of the Atlantic liners, Mauretania and Lusitania. Between the 7th February and October the Lusitania made twelve westward voyages, covering 34,400 - sea milts, at an average speed of 24% J knots. Between the 12th February and J , November last she made twelve eastward ■ passages, amounting to a total distance of 34.500 miles, at an average speed of 24 knots. On two westward voyages m

August and September she averaged 25.65 and 23.55 knots, her highest .average spee<T being 25.17 knots. Similarlvfthe Mauretania ; over 40,000 miles, in fourteen westward passages, maintained an average speed of 25.44 knots, whilst in the other direction her speed for 40,500 miles was 25y 2 knots. _ These speeds have naturally been maintained in all sorts of weather, sometimes under most unfavorable conditions of wind and sea. an' often under hindrance through fog. The substitution of two four-bladed screws on the forward shafts for the

three-bladed propellers originally fitted much reduced the propeller vibration, and the same thing resulted when « similar ehan<re was carried out in tin; Lusitania. The measure of the improvement in the performances of these , vessels may he gathered from the fact, | that prior'to Alar, 1008, the best ave- | \aw speed of the Mauretania to the westward was 24.85? knots, while the hest | trip in 1000 raised the average to 2fi.on knots. Such an increase in speed would have meant an increase of no less than 25 per cent, in horse-power, supposing that there had been no change in propeller efficiency.

The F.TT.S liner Devon is at present In, 1 din™ frown meat in the Waitara road . stead and after completion sails for Pic--1 ton. , .
