STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Resident Correspondent.) fclrutford, March !). " It would be very interesting if the amount of goods which are shipped respectively from Wellington via Patea and Xew Plymouth for Stratford could |be ascertained. Probably it would be found that the greater portion is now I coming through the southern port, not ■because the charges are less, but simply ■ for the reason that there is a better service of steamers and the transit is quicker. Judging from the complaints of business men here, there is every prospect that trade now coming through your port will soon be diverted. An instance of the delay which ensues was i given me by a business man to-day. He ; had goods in Wellington last Friday , week to conie forward; they had to wait there for a steamer for New Plymouth; ,when they d'd arrive there was a block j of cargo, with the result that they have not yet reached here. In future all his goods from Wellington will come via Patea. The cause of the trouble appears t<> be, firstly, that the steamers come up spasmodically, instead of there being one boat at the beginning and one at the end of the week; and secondly, that the cargo all coming in at once causes v congestion which the railway authorities are unable to cope with. Any| way, one thing is certain, that unless I there is a material improvement in the state of affairs it will not be long beI fore all the business people here will be getting their goods from Wellington via Patea. The wrestling match between Scott and Bain last night was not a very interesting affair to watch. The terms of the match were such as to militate against a spectacular bout, inasmuch as Scott wagered he could thrown Bain three times in an hour. Bain very naturally assumed the defensive, with the result that the attack was all on Scott's side. As it was, Bain won. Scott only securing one fall in the specified time, and over this there was a diversity of opinion. to the contest Scott challenged Bain to a three-style match, but the latter declined the offer, but expressed himself agreeable to a catch-as-catcli-can match, first two out of three pin falls to win. Nothing definite was arrived at, but probably a match will be arranged. Prior to the match Robertson challenged Scott to a match for -€25 a-side under the same conditions as governed that evening's contest. Scott was not prepared to accept the challenge unless flying falls were allowed. A contest for a trophy drew six entrants, and was held prior to and after the big event, but the final between E. Hine and W. Clover was not concluded. . A croquet match between the Strat-' ford and Xew Plymouth clubs was played yesterday, victory resting with the home team bv 20D to 115. The return match will be played at Xew Plymouth. A purebred TTolstein cow belonging to Mr R. H. Cameron, of Stratford, recently »ave birth to four calves at one ea'ving. The calves all died. There are excellent entries for the Horticultural Society's show to-morrow and Friday. Therp is keen rivalry in 1 th»> school comnftition.

Dr. Carberv is leaving on a trip to England in .Tinp. He expects to be away over a year.
