Lord Chelmsford opened the Mitchell Library, a handsome stone building erected by the' Government in Mac-quarie-street to house the library bequeathed to the State by the late David Scott Mitchell. It consists of over 00,000 books, many valuable manuscripts, objects oi art, and pictures, altogether the finest collection of records of Australian history in existence.
