THE NEWCASTLE STRIKE

SUGGESTED LABOR RETALIATION. GENERAL STRIKE, By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, March 7. The Broken Hill Combined Unions Committee supports the proposal to organise a general strike for one week throughout Australia, as a protest against the Government's treatment, of the Newcastle strike leaders. STRIKERS' LATEST DEMAND. Received March 7, 10.45 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. At ttie conclusion of a meeting of Newcastle colliery-owners to-day, the following communication was made to the Press: "The proprietors were asked by the employees' federation to state how many men are at present employed in the mines, and if they are unionists. What the federation really wants is that we should dismiss these men. That is precisely what we refuse to do. These men came to our assistance in time of trouble, and the meeting: unanimously decided not to sacrifice them. We do not intend to budge an inch."
