At the moment of the strike in Philadelphia, orchestras in hotels and cafes ceased playing, and cab and taxi drivers abandoned their vehicles. The police force lias been doubled, and every fireman is at his post. The authorities prevented an open-air meeting. Many large works are still not seriously affected. Some of the oars are running, guarded by police.
