BATTLE OF WAIREKA.
JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. There was a larje attendant' of veterans at (lie Town Hall on Saturday, when a meeting was held for the purpose of considering the best method of fittingly celebra ting the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Waireka. I Lieutenant Davies presided. A lOinmitj tee appointed to go into . tile matter . 'had decided to recommend that the cele- | brat ions take the same form as last I'year. Several veterans, however, were 1 of opinion that the celebrations should '■ last two days, and should include a picj nic on the grounds on Easter .Monday 1 and a shooting match and dinner the j following day. Considerable discussion ensued. I Sergt. Adlam thought they could not | get. the veterans to attend on two days. If there were a picnic they would get no shooting. | Lieut. Wells said that in addition to |. 'the shooting match and stopper, the i committee had decided to recomniond ! that the veterans meet in the centre of the town and march round the principal | streets, and afterwards proceed to St. 'Mary's C-harch for a short service, and thence by brake to the rifle range at Waiwakaino. Private W. D. Webster thought that 'it would he quite sufficient if the celebrations were held on one day. i Sergt. Meredith suggested that the j picnic could take place at the rifle range simultaneously with the picnic, j- The chairman said that the cclcbra- ! tions last year were very satisfactory, i although the weather was unfavorable. |. The suggestion of a picnic was favorj ed by Bugler Walker and Private AnI drews, the latter also suggesting that 1 the celebrations on this occasion should (be on a large,- scale than formerly. If a picnic were Tield their wives and other members of their families could enjoy themselves. I A letter from Color-Sergeant Stevens, of Wellington, was read by Private Webster, in which the writer intimated that he would endeavor to be present at the celebrations, and suggesting that the Railway Department be approached with a view to obtaining special privileges, so that outside veterans could attend. After some further discussion it was decided, on the motion of Lieut. Wells, ■seconded by Private Webster. "That the veterans meet in the square, march -round the town, attend church service and then march back to the square, from whence they will travel bv 'bus or express to Waiwakaiho. where a. shooting match and picnic will be hold." It was also decided to conclude the day with a social. The following committee was appointed to make necessary arrangements:—Messrs Wells. Adlam. Oxcnham, Sampson, W. D. Webster, ,T.
