FINANCES OF NEW YORK. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright New York, March 4. The Budget of New York City shows a deficiency of £(5,000,000 sterling. The Mayor, Mr. Justice Gaynor, proposes to abolish all taxes on persona] property, substituting increased rates on real estate. He contends that the present system is a source of bribery and extortion, the assessment of personal estates being left to the caprice of clerks, and multi-millionaires escape by securing a legai residence in districts where personal taxes are not levied. STRIKE LEADERS INDICTED. New York, March 4. The grand jury at Philadelphia indicted Murphy, president of the Central Labor Union, and Pratt, leader of the strikers, for inciting a riot. Pratt is also charged with conspiracy. AMERICAN MAIL SUBSIDIES. New York, March 4. The United States Senate Committee on Commerce favors Senator Gillinger's Bill authorising an increase of the subsidies to mail steamers trading to South America, the Philippines, Japan, China and Australia to 17s per mile for firstand second-class steamers and 8s for third-class. MADAME CALVE. London, March 4. Madame Calve, the great singer, has sailed for Australia and New Zealand. EQUITABLE LIFE OFFICE. New Yorlc, March 4. Mr. Piernont Morgan is perfecting the reorganisation of the Enuitable Life Assurance Society of New York, wheroof he recently secured control, on a mutual basis.
